Nigeria: Bishop Feyi Daniels has been detained at Kirikiri Prison in Lagos over accusations of rape, according to a court ruling.
On Monday, Bishop Oluwafeyiropo (Feyi) Daniels was present at the Lagos Special Crimes Court in Ikeja, facing two rape charges.
Despite pleading not guilty, Daniels was released on certain conditions, including a 20 million naira bond and two property bails within the state. However, Judge Ramon A. Oshodi ordered an expedited hearing and transferred him to the Kirikiri Correctional Center until he fulfilled his bail requirements. As part of his bail conditions, the church leader was also instructed to surrender his international passport to the court. The trial was adjourned until May 9, 2023.
Back in March, the Lagos General Prosecutor’s Office, DPP, called for Daniels to be prosecuted for allegedly raping two women, including an assistant pastor. The case was investigated by the Force’s Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, in Ikoyi, where both victims provided statements.
The incident that prompted a legal opinion in December 2022 involved the Lagos Sexual and Domestic Violence Response Authority (DSVA). In the notice signed by DPP Director Babajide Martins, it was stated that upon a thorough review of the facts, Daniel committed an offense of rape under Section 260 of the Penal Code, Ch. C17, Volume 3, Law of the State of Lagos, 2015.
“The truth of the duplicate file reveals that the suspect… has a church branch in Akungba Akoko (Ondo) where he has young people as pastors and assistant pastors.” The DPP report said: “It was also revealed that Oluwafeyiropo Daniels occasionally invited pastors and branch assistants to his home for one reason or another.”
According to the Daily Report, Daniels reportedly exploited one of the assistant pastors whenever she visited his residence in the Ikota neighborhood of Lagos.
