Fully funded Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists for 2023-2024. Each year, the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and more than 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Foreign Student Scholarships (FCS).
The Swiss government’s excellence scholarships are aimed at young foreign researchers holding a master’s or doctorate and foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.
Types of Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
- The research grant is accessible to postgraduate researchers of all disciplines (holders of at least a master’s degree) who plan to come to Switzerland to carry out research or pursue studies at the doctoral or post-doctoral level (research grant, PhD, Postdoc ).
Research grants are awarded for research or studies at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal polytechnic schools, as well as the four research institutes. Only applicants nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered. - Art scholarships are open to art students wishing to pursue a first master’s degree in Switzerland ( arts ).
Art scholarships are awarded to study at any Swiss conservatory or art university. This scholarship is available for students from a limited number of countries only.
Eligibility for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
University scholarship applicants must:
- Hold a university degree (Bachelor’s / Masters) at the start of the scholarship.
- Be able to demonstrate their academic abilities and what they aim to achieve.
- Contact the establishment and/or the professor responsible for their research period. Universities may request additional information and/or set certain additional conditions to determine whether or not you qualify for admission.
- Be under the age of 35 (born on or after January 1, 1978).
- Have sufficient command of the language of instruction (French, German, Italian or English) in order to take full advantage of their studies in Switzerland.

- The scholarship covers a monthly payment, tuition waiver, health insurance, airfare, special housing allowance, etc.
Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for the selection of foreign scholars and artists
Applications are subject to pre-selection by the competent national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. Pre-selected applications are then evaluated by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which makes the final decision.
The FCS evaluates scholarship applications according to three criteria:
- Candidate profile
- Quality of the research project or artistic work
- Synergies and potential for future research cooperation
The FCS is made up of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarships are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.
FCS will select scholarship recipients for the 2023-24 academic year by the end of May 2023. Scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year will be announced online beginning in August 2023.
